The Story Behind the Rotary Club of Olney AED/CPR Community Awareness Program
In 2017, one of the guest speakers at the Olney Rotary Club’s weekly breakfast
meeting talked about the impact of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in
a cardiac emergency. The statistics for survival, if an AED is used in a heart
attack, were impressive. It occurred to a few of our club members that it would
be a worthy project by getting AEDs mounted outdoors at the local shopping
centers in our area. The recent cardiac arrest with Damar Hamlin has driven
home clearly the life-saving advantage of early defibrillation.
The Club received landlord permission and installed the AEDs in the Village Mart
outside of Giant, Fair Hill next to Harris Teeter, and one by the Green Turtle.
With immense support from Rescue-One, the company supplying the AEDs, the
Club organized a Community AED/CPR Awareness class at the Sandy Spring Vol
Fire Dept Ballroom, and about 200 people came to become acquainted with
using an AED on someone near them if they had a cardiac event.
Each AED, with a weatherproof box, is mounted in a shopping center. The cost
all-in is $2,000 per unit, which includes a maintenance contract. Donations
towards additional AEDs are gratefully accepted at olneyrotary.org.
There are still four other locations the Club wants to install in: the CVS Shopping
center, the Roots Shopping center, and two in the Olney Shopping Center.
The evolution of how this CPR/AED community outreach event has evolved is a
tale of how networking and hearing from other professionals in the Greater Olney
community can be a seed planted for new relationships. The Club is always
looking for speakers at its meetings on Thursday mornings at IHOP.
The Rotary Club invites you to meet them on Thursday mornings at 7:30 am at the IHOP.
